NYS DOT adds new safety markings on State roads in City of Dunkirk

These are “sharrows”

NYS DOT adds new safety markings on State roads in City of Dunkirk

The new markings on New York State Route 60 in Dunkirk are called “sharrows.” They are an official marking designated in the New York State Department of Transportation’s Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Section 9C.07 of the MUTCD describes these as “shared lane markings.” They are used nationwide to promote shared safe use of the road by indicating:

When you bike: Sharrows designate a safe and visible place to ride. Sharrows also indicate the correct direction to travel.

When you drive: Keep an eye out for all types of travel — bikes, pedestrians, skateboards, etc. Drive slowly and give ample room when passing.

New York State Route 5 in the City also has additional new markings for bike routes, bike lanes, and for crosswalks that are compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.
