City of Dunkirk Water System Improvement Projects
I. Projects Completed
- City wide replacement of residential, commercial and industrial water meters.
- Installed new grating on intake crib in Lake Erie.
- Installed piping connection for emergency backwash pump.
- Installed new automatic valves and controls for Filter No. 2
- Installed new roofs for Filter and Chemical Buildings, including insulation.
- Installed new suspended ceiling in Filter Room.
- Completed demolition work including removal of obsolete piping and valves.
- Completed new heating systems for Filter Building, Chemical Building and Pipe Galleries.
- Installed new finished water (high lift) pump.
- Completed electrical wiring for new heating system and installation of electric unit heaters.
- Completed painting of exterior of the Benton Street Water Storage Tank.
- Completed miscellaneous building repairs and upgrades including new suspended ceilings, bathrooms renovations, flooring, and other miscellaneous items.
- Completed Contract 4-2011 – Furnish Filter Valves, Actuators and Venturi Meters.
- Completed Contract 7-2011 – First Ward Waterline Replacement Project.
- Replaces Low Lift (raw water) Pump.
- Purchased seven (7) filter control consoles.
II. Projects Currently Under Construction
A. Contract 1-2011: Willowbrook Storage Tank
- New 2.0 million gallon elevated storage tank
- Estimated completion: August 2013
B. Contract 8-2011: Filter Renovations
- Replacement of filter valves for Filters 1 and 3-8
- Insulate filter piping and walls.
- Renovation of Filter No. 6 with new under drain, air scour system and filter media (will allow increase in filtration capacity).
- Install new air blower system for air scour backwash.
- Estimated completion: April 2013
C. Contract 1-2012: Electrical Wiring for Filter Control Consoles
- Estimated completion: April 2013
III. Pending Projects to Complete Consent Order Obligations
A. Renovations of Filters No’s. 1-5, 7 and 8
- Install new under-drains, air scour system, filter media and associated piping in remaining 7 filters.
- Filter building renovations including new doors, windows and other building improvements.
- Design work nearly complete. Construction estimated to start in April or May 2013
B. Eliminate Backwash Storage Tanks
- Clear well expansion and new Pump Building with backwash and high lift pumping systems. Install new backwash water storage tank.
- Also includes items identified in 2008 Facility Plan including replacement of Chemical feed systems, valves, piping, instrumentation, new trac-vac systems and other work.
- Currently under design. Construction estimated to start late 2013 or early 2014
C. Electrical System Upgrades and SCADA System
- Replacement of portions of the electrical system at the Water Plant
- Installation of new computerized monitoring and control system (SCADA) to automate plant operations.
- Relocation of existing standby generator to new high lift pump building.
- Currently under design. Construction estimated to start late 2013 or early 2014.
D. Roof Replacement for High Lift Pump Station
- Not in Consent order but required due to condition of roof and parapet wall.
Al-Tech Remediation Plan
City of Dunkirk Paint Incentive Program
Started in 2012, the Paint Incentive Program assists individuals that wish to paint their houses. This program will award twenty (20) $250 grants to income eligible people who paint their house. Funding is closed for 2012, please check back.
Dunkirk's Rising Star Program
This program began in 2010 to promote and recognize City property owners who make significant exterior improvements to existing residential homes, which in turn, helps to “elevate” the image of City neighborhoods. Monthly winners received donations from local home improvement businesses in the area. This program normally runs from May-September.
Community Gardens
The City of Dunkirk, in order to provide an opportunity to the public to enhance the character of our community, has created a Community Garden Program whereby interested City individuals and groups are allowed to utilize various parcels of City property to establish and to maintain community gardens.
