City of Dunkirk Gears Up for A New Dog Park

The City of Dunkirk is pleased to announce the official signing of the lease agreement for the City’s first dog park. After great deliberation, the City passed a resolution to locate the dog park on private property that was generously offered to the city through a $1 per year lease agreement. The property owner, Mr. Robert Jeysman will provide approximately one acre of his land for the Dog Park and a separate parking area for the park. This dog park will be located at 855 Main Street Extension.

The City of Dunkirk’s Planning and Development Department feels this is a step in the right direction for attracting new resident’s to the City. Rebecca Yanus, Director of Planning and Development states that, “the younger generation is looking for new amenities such as dog parks when deciding where they want to live and work. Having this park will not only be an additional feature for the City, but will also be another attraction to bring people here and boost our economy.”

Three quotes have been collected for the price of fencing for the dog park. The City is now in the process of selecting which company they will be going with. This dog park would not be made possible without the help of Purina and their generous grant of $10,000 to get this project started. The cost of the fencing and amenities for the Dog Park will exceed the $10,000 and the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation will now be accepting donations for this park.

The Mayor has expressed that, “I want to thank Mr. Jeysman for his kind agreement to provide the land needed for this dog park. I also want to thank Purina for the generous funding to make this dog park a reality. I look forward to the grand opening of the dog park and the new space that our residents will now be able to utilize in order to exercise their dogs.”

“On behalf of all of the pet lovers at Purina, we are happy to help make this dog park dream a reality,” said Ron Bowers, Plant Manager at Purina’s Dunkirk pet food manufacturing facility. “Pets are at the heart of the work we do every day, and having a dog park in our community will be a great asset for residents and visitors alike. Pets have a great way of bringing people together.”

Donations can be accepted in the form of cash, check, and credit card through PayPal. If you would like to make a donation, all checks should be made out to the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation (DLDC) Atn: Dunkirk Dog Park.
